As I had hoped, there is no standard model to produce a beam of coherent light. The basic principle of using an optical resonator and a gain medium is valid, but on a quantum level it is different depending on the gain medium, and the optical resonator doesn't have to feedback to stimulate.
Masing is a more general term, lasing is a type of masing. Masing occurs in a homogeneous medium that undergoes a population inversion where a significant portion of the atoms are at a metastable and high-energy quantum level. The atoms spontaneously emit the excited wavelength as a coherent beam. This occurs naturally in space sometimes when certain conditions are met, like coherent velocity (otherwise doppler shifting would cause the wavelengths to be dissonant) and proper polarization of the atoms (usually due to the presence of a magnetic field).
So on Plott World, a maser would be a simple device to produce coherent light for ritual or identification purposes. A laser would be more technical, capable of producing a high-amplitude weaponized conherent light.
