Really?
This is the estimated composition of the universe (pulled off wikipedia):
Yes, 96% of it is assumed to be phenomena that cannot be observed, and by their nature only interact with reality to generate gravity. And yes, they were looking for what could create that gravity before they "found" dark matter and dark energy. So it's somewhat obvious that those two phenomena were made up to fit the extant conceptions of the universe.
